Dr. Ricci FONG was invited to present at a symposium entitled “Building up Positive Educational Capital” on November 20, 2017. The symposium was part of the 4th Positive Education Seminar Series jointly organized by the Bei Shan Tang Education Foundation and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

The 4-day Seminar Series aimed to facilitate knowledge transfer between local universities and schools, as well as to provide educators with professional knowledge and skills essential for developing school-based positive education curriculum. Apart from the aforementioned symposium, the Seminar Series also included professional training seminars delivered by members of the Geelong Grammar School, Australia, alongside visits to schools that have implemented positive education in their school-based curriculum. Chaired by Professor CHIU Chi Yue, Dean of Social Science at CUHK, representatives of five research teams from four universities in Hong Kong (i.e. the University of Hong Kong, CUHK, EdUHK and City University of Hong Kong) were invited to share their research initiatives and insights at the symposium. A total of 350 teachers and school principals participated in the event.

In her sharing entitled “Development of well-being and positive education programs in Hong Kong”, Dr. FONG outlined two ongoing research projects that members of Learning Sciences Area of Strength (AoS), including herself and Dr. Junjun CHEN from the Department of Education Policy and Leadership, are currently leading. The presentation helped to raise the awareness of school administrators and educators regarding what research efforts are in place to promote student well-being and school development. Through which, it was hoped that more active research collaboration between schools and the research teams could be established to foster the research-practice nexus and contribute to the development of a more positive learning environment in Hong Kong. The symposium ended with a panel discussion which encouraged professional dialogues on how positive education can be promoted among Hong Kong schools.
