The Learning Sciences Area of Strength (AOS) of the Faculty of Education and Human Development organized a symposium on “The role of emotions in learning and teaching: Findings across school sectors” This symposium was held under the aegis of the World Education Research Association (WERA) Focal Meeting & Hong Kong Education Research Association (HKERA) International Conference in Nov 30, 2017.

The objectives of the symposium were to share research findings from the primary, secondary and higher education sectors on how emotions influence learning and teaching and to discuss their implications on teaching, learning, and curriculum.

Speakers of the symposium included Dr. Junjun Chen, Dr. Ricci Fong, Dr. Joy Yang and Dr. Karen Zhoc. Dr. Ricci Fong shared a study on how perfectionism and self-compassion were associated with test-related hope in the primary school context. Dr. Joy Lan Yang focused on achievement emotions of the secondary students, examining how positive and negative emotions were related to academic performance. Dr. Karen Zhoc presented a study on how emotional intelligence influenced student learning outcomes via self-directed learning in higher education. Dr. Junjun Chen highlighted the relationship between teacher emotions and their approaches to teaching.

Collectively, the papers in the symposium advanced our understanding of emotions in learning and teaching. The symposium was well-attended by international and local scholars.
